VIDEO: Would-be kidnapper tries to snatch toddler from stroller in Glendale

GLENDALE, Calif. (KABC) -- Dramatic surveillance video captured the frightening moment when a would-be kidnapper tried to snatch a 14-month-old right out of a stroller in Glendale. The incident was one of two abduction attempts in the city on Wednesday.

One angle of the footage shows the mother pushing the stroller near the intersection of Chevy Chase Drive and Adams Street.

Another angle shows a silver vehicle pulling up right alongside her and coming to a stop. The driver exits the car, approaches the mother and is seen leaning down toward the child in the stroller.

Though the view of the camera is partially obstructed by a car, the footage shows a struggle between the suspect and the mother. The suspect is then seen running away, out of the camera's view.

Police said the suspect grabbed the child in the stroller, but the mother fought back. That's when the suspect fled the scene, investigators said.

The suspect in this case was described as a woman with short, black hair wearing heavy, winter-style clothing.

Police later said they are looking for a silver 2014-16 Nissan Versa Note hatchback.

Police said this incident occurred around 5:10 p.m. A second attempted kidnapping occurred around 25 minutes later and less than a half mile away outside John Marshall Elementary School, located at 1201 East Broadway.

An 8-year-old boy called 911 to report that someone tried to kidnap his 3-year-old brother.

According to police, the victim's mother was standing nearby and was able to stop the kidnapping. The suspect fled the scene in a small four-door silver vehicle, authorities said.

The 8-year-old boy told police that the suspect appeared to be a man who was dressed like a woman.

The mother described the suspect as a man in his late 40s or 50s with salt-and-pepper hair and a two-day old beard. She said the suspect was wearing a gray shirt with a multi-colored design on the front.

It is not clear whether there is one suspect or if there are two people working together, but Glendale police believe the two incidents are connected.

In both incidents, the suspect or suspects told the children, "You're so cute," before grabbing them, police said.

Because the second incident happened next to a school, the Glendale Unified School District is making sure more adults are present during dropoff and pickup times.

Parents with young children are talking to their kids about "stranger danger" and keeping their guard up.
