Reward offered in LA sheriff's security officer shooting
A $30,000 reward was announced Monday for information leading to the killer of an LA County Sheriff's Department security officer in July.

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. (KABC) -- A $30,000 reward was announced Monday for information leading to the killer of a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department security services officer who was fatally shot in July.

Calvin Gray, 33, was shot and killed while dropping off his son in the Vermont Knolls neighborhood in South Los Angeles on July 29.

Police say someone fired into Gray's car in the 1000 block of West 76th Street. Authorities believe the shots were fired from another car. Gray's vehicle struck several parked cars before coming to a stop.

"This was a setup. I believe it was a setup. Jealousy," said Margaret Gray, Calvin Gray's mother. "This is hurting us. And I've got two sons crying like it happened yesterday. They just cry every day and they still hurt."

A motive for the shooting remains unknown. Gray worked as a security officer for the sheriff's department. Authorities say Gray was off-duty at the time of the shooting.

Family members say Gray had a heart for community service and wanted to eventually become a sheriff deputy. They say once a month he would go out and feed the homeless.

The L.A. Professional Peace Officers Association offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to the killer, and the County Board of Supervisors offered a $10,000 reward.

Anyone with information is urged to call detectives at (877) LAPD-24-7, or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
