LANCASTER, Calif. (KABC) -- A former "Power Rangers" actor pleaded not guilty Friday to a murder charge in the 2015 stabbing death of his roommate.

The arraignment for Ricardo Medina comes eight months after he was re-arrested for the murder of Joshua Sutter. Medina is being held on $1 million bail.

Medina's father said his son stabbed Sutter in self-defense, adding that if the court proceeds to trial the truth will come out.

"We know that there's a process. We're confident and believe in this process, and we're prepared to go to the end," Bob Naranjo said.

Allen Bell, Medina's attorney, said he still has not received a response to a formal complaint he filed. In the complaint, Bell accuses the deputy district attorney on the case of dishonesty and providing false information to the court during a bail hearing earlier this year.

In addition to the complaint, Bell said Sutter was only stabbed once and alleges the autopsy report confused previous dog bites for stab wounds.

"I can only conclude that the conduct that we complained of is being ratified by the district attorney, and ignored by the district attorney, and, or I hate to say, maybe covered up by the district attorney," Bell said.

But Rachel Kennedy, Sutter's sister, said the incident happened at her dog rescue ranch near Green Valley, a place where both men were hired to work.

While holding her brother's ashes, she came to court waiting for justice.

"This is a stabbing. This is very personal and very gruesome," she said.

Medina's preliminary hearing is scheduled sometime in October. He will remain in jail until then, but his attorney said there's a possibility the prosecution may not be able to proceed past the hearing due to insufficient evidence.

The deputy district attorney said she could not comment on the case.
