Off-duty Hawthorne officer shot at during robbery attempt in South LA

A suspect tried to rob and opened fire on an off-duty Hawthorne police officer in South Los Angeles Thursday afternoon.

Authorities said the incident happened near 24th and Hill streets around 3 p.m. The suspect had opened fire on the officer, but did not hit him and the off-duty officer returned fire.

It was unclear if any arrests were made.

The investigation was ongoing.
