RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. (KABC) -- The first step has been taken to build an artificial reef on the coast of the Palos Verdes peninsula.

The California State Lands Commission approved a lease for the Southern California Marine Institute.

The artificial reef would replace the natural one destroyed by landslides in the 1950s and 1990s.

Supporters of the reef said it's needed to provide a habitat for marine life, lost after the landslides.
