INDIO, Calif. (KABC) -- Aftershocks continue to rattle the Indio area following a 4.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Monday.

On Wednesday, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck nearly six miles northeast of Indio Hills around 12:30 a.m., according to the USGS. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

About 30 minutes after that, a 2.5 aftershock was reported.

Aftershocks recorded Tuesday ranged from magnitude 2.8 to 3.6 - seismic activity that's strong enough to be felt but not cause major problems.

ABC7 has compiled a list of items that are important to have in your earthquake kit so that you're prepared for "the big one."

Monday's quake hit just before 6 p.m. and was strong enough to knock items from store shelves. Multiple aftershocks followed.

Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or serious damage.

Eyewitness News received many calls and messages from viewers - from Palm Springs, Los Angeles and as far south as San Diego - saying they felt the jolt.

Earthquake expert Lucy Jones said the magnitude 4.9 earthquake was the largest quake to hit Southern California in almost a year.
