Driver slams into parked cars in South Whittier, leaving 1 overturned

SOUTH WHITTIER, Calif. (KABC) -- A driver slammed into as many as seven parked cars early Saturday on a street in Whittier, leaving one of them overturned onto its side.

The incident was reported shortly after 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of Meyer Road and Imperial Highway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers arrived at the scene to find multiple vehicles that sustained major damage.

"I just heard a loud noise and then I realized something was happening outside because the alarms were going off," Marisol Vargas said, adding that seven vehicles were damaged. "So I came out and then my car, as you can see, is flipped to the side."

At least one person was transported to a hospital with unknown injuries.

Eliza Ramos, a witness, said the driver was pulled out of his vehicle by others "and they tried to hold him down but he's a big man. So as soon as he heard the cops coming, he tried to flee. That's when he went over the fence and he tried to basically kill himself because he knew he was in trouble."

Ramos said the suspect "rolled down the hill and snapped his neck and that's when a lot of blood came out." She said he was the person transported to a hospital.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.

No arrest was immediately announced.
