Driver of stolen pickup truck leads police LA's Westside

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A driver was tackled and taken into custody early Tuesday afternoon after leading police on a high-speed chase through the Westside of Los Angeles in a pickup truck that was reported stolen.

The meandering pursuit made its way through neighborhoods including Santa Monica, Pico-Robertson and Sunset Park, on surface streets and briefly on the 10 Freeway.

Los Angeles Police Department officers attempted multiple PIT maneuvers that were unsuccessful as the suspect continued his evasive maneuvers, with several patrol vehicles giving chase. The driver also drove at least two spike strips that were place in the roadway by authorities.

At 11:45 a.m., the pickup truck stopped in the middle of a street and officers exited their vehicles with their guns drawn. After a moment, however, the suspect sped off and the chase continued.

The man behind the wheel of the four-door truck was seen casually resting his left arm on the ledge of the driver-side window, occasionally taunting the police.

Shortly before noon, he exited the truck in Venice and took a few steps toward the officers. He then turned on his heel, darted back toward the pickup and jumped back in.

A few seconds later, the suspect again stopped the truck and got out. This time he was swarmed by officers who tackled him to the ground and took him into custody.

Where the truck was reported stolen was not immediately known.
