Family blames Harbor-UCLA after man put on life support

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A 37-year-old local man is on life support, and his family is outraged, blaming Harbor-UCLA Medical Center for his condition.

Jose Villanueva, who was diabetic and blind, was admitted to Harbor-UCLA on Saturday afternoon for back pain.

On Tuesday, his family was told he was being discharged, even though Villanueva was clearly not well, the family said. He was disoriented, and his speech was slurred.

"They said they were going to call the police on us if we didn't sign the documents," said Jose's brother, Hector Villanueva.

Less than 24 hours after his discharge from the hospital, the family had to call 911. Villanueva is now at Saint Francis Medical Center after suffering two strokes.

Harbor-UCLA Medical said in a statement, "We take such allegations seriously. Our concern is always for a patient's healthcare and wellbeing. Because of patient privacy, we cannot comment further. We will continue to investigate."

The family has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for his medical expenses.
