Labor Day Parade draws crowds to Wilmington

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The 35th annual Labor Day Parade in Wilmington paid tribute to social and economic achievements of workers.

The parade, which went up Avalon Boulevard between E and M streets, lasted about 45 minutes Monday morning. Several school bands performed along the route.

The event was also a march and rally with the theme, "Stop the War on Workers." Union members at the event called for a fully-funded educational system, more labor-friendly jobs to be created, and their collective bargaining rights to be protected.

They also wanted everyone to know that Labor Day is more than just a day off.

"It's a really beautiful holiday and a lot of times it just gets caught up in just a day off, but it's amazing to put the emphasis back on the employee, back on the labor, the person who is trying to support their family with wages," said parade-goer Jon Armstrong.
