Massive industrial fire in South Gate prompts shelter-in-place; nearby residents report power outage

SOUTH GATE, Calif. (KABC) -- Firefighters are battling a large industrial fire in South Gate as thick black smoke and flames rise into the air.

A shelter-in-place order is in effect for the area around Garfield Avenue and Imperial Highway.

AIR7 video shows crews attacking the blaze from the roof and from ladders as they work to gain control of the second-alarm fire.

Aerial footage also shows a large plume of black smoke billowing over the area as crews continue their efforts.

The fire appears to be near homes, though it was not immediately clear whether any other structures are threatened.

Some nearby residents have reported power outages. According to Southern California Edison, a fire-related power outage is impacting 493 customers near the fire.

The outage began just before 3:30 p.m. and power is expected to be restored around 5 p.m., according to SCE's website.
