2 killed, 3 injured in Long Beach hit-and-run crash

LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- Two people were killed and three others were injured in a hit-and-run crash in Long Beach overnight, prompting a search for the driver responsible.

The deadly incident happened just after 10 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and 6th Street, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Investigators believe the driver of an orange 2021 BMW 330i was possibly speeding and ran a red light through the intersection, hitting a gray 2022 Nissan Altima. The BMW continued and then struck a black 2014 Kia Soul.

The driver abandoned the BMW and took off from the scene before police arrived.

Two passengers of the Nissan, only identified as a man and woman, died at the scene.

Long Beach resident Tinisha Gooden described the chaos after the collision.

"As I got right here to the corner, I saw a young female," Gooden said. "...She looked real young, in her early 20s, face down on the floor. People were trying to turn her over and I'm like 'do not move her' because you could injure her more."

Three other adult victims were taken to the hospital with injuries, but they are all expected to be OK.

People who live nearby say the intersection is dangerous.

"People drive here like this is a freeway," said Helen Bushrod. "They come out of the freeway... the 710 Freeway... and they rush out here like 60, 70 miles per hour."

The investigation is ongoing, including whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the deadly crash.
