DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A young man was hospitalized after being shot during a street takeover early Saturday in downtown Los Angeles, police said.

The illegal takeover was reported at 1:15 at the intersection of 18th and Main streets, according to an LAPD spokesperson.

As officers arrived at the scene, they heard gunfire and saw a crowd of spectators scattering, the spokesperson said.

The officers found an 18-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds to his neck and jaw, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. He was transported to a hospital in stable condition.

Video from the scene shows a car performing a donut maneuver in the intersection before the shots are fired. Witnesses also reported seeing a group of people boxing before the gunfire.

The gunman fled the scene and remained at large, the LAPD said. A description was not available.

It is unknown what led up to the shooting, or if it's gang-related.
