Road rage suspect in custody after high-speed chase ends with PIT maneuver in Montebello

MONTEBELLO, Calif. (KABC) -- California Highway Patrol officers pulled a road rage suspect out of an SUV and took him into custody Tuesday morning after a high-speed chase ended with a PIT maneuver on a residential street in Montebello.

The chase, involving multiple law enforcement agencies, made its way southbound on the 405 Freeway in Sherman Oaks before transitioning to the eastbound 10 Freeway and heading into the Central Los Angeles area.

The driver of the black Range Rover then led CHP officers into the San Gabriel Valley before exiting the freeway and entering a residential neighborhood.

A Highway Patrol officer performed a PIT maneuver by striking the suspect's SUV on the driver side, bringing it to a stop in the middle of the street.

Three officers immediately emerged from their vehicle and ran around to the front passenger door. They reached in and yanked the suspect out of the Range Rover, forcefully took to to the ground and handcuffed him.

The suspect was initially thought to possibly be suspected in a fatal overnight shooting of a man at the Santa Monica Pier, but authorities later refuted that connection.

On July 3, "the Santa Monica Police Department responded to a reported road rage incident involving a firearm near Cloverfield Boulevard and Broadway," according to a news release issued after the chase ended. "The suspect left the area before officers arrived, and an investigation was initiated."

On Tuesday morning, Santa Monica police investigators found the suspect in the San Fernando Valley.

An investigation is underway after a man was shot and killed near the Santa Monica Pier overnight, police said.

"When officers attempted to make contact, the suspect fled in a vehicle," the statement said. "The California Highway Patrol has assumed primary responsibility for the pursuit," with Santa Monica officers assisting.

No other details were released, but authorities confirmed that the alleged road rage incident and the suspect in custody were unrelated to the homicide investigation stemming from the fatal shooting at the Santa Monica Pier.
