Phoenix police shoot, kill man who was subduing armed intruder

PHOENIX (KABC) -- New video shows the moments leading up to a police shooting in Phoenix that ended with the death of a man who was trying to subdue an armed suspect who broke into his home.

A portion of the struggle was captured by a surveillance camera on the home's porch as two people try to disarm the man near the open front door and a woman runs outside screaming for help.

Moments later, a man also runs outside while on the phone with 911.

The deadly incident unfolded Jan. 26 after several frantic calls to 911. A man and woman who called for help are heard on dispatch audio saying that someone was shooting inside the home.

Responding officers arrived with their weapons drawn. Neighbors pointed them to the home, telling them there were children inside and someone was shooting a gun.

Moments later, an officer opened fire. The man who was shot was a father who had just disarmed the intruder.

The man who was killed has been identified as Christian Diaz Rendon. He was sitting on top of Edgar Garcia, the man he had just disarmed.

Garcia is now facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, burglary, kidnapping and aggravated assault.

The officer who opened fire is a 5-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department. Multiple use-of-force investigations are now underway.
