Suspect killed in CHP shooting at Covina gas station after assaulting tow truck driver on 210 Fwy
COVINA, Calif. (KABC) -- A suspect was shot and killed by police at a gas station in Covina after a chase and reported assault on the eastbound 210 Freeway in Glendora, which was fully shut down for several hours as part of the investigation Friday.
It all unfolded around 3 a.m. the suspect called a tow truck on the freeway at Grand Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol, they got into some sort of argument on the freeway shoulder and the suspect opened fire, striking the tow driver, and took off.
When CHP officers responded, they found the victim suffering from major injuries. Officers tracked down the suspect and a chase ensued.
Some 10 minutes later, the chase ended at a gas station on Arrow Highway and Citrus Avenue in Covina.
"When the vehicle stopped, the subject exited the vehicle and produced a firearm," a CHP officer told reporters at the scene.
It's unclear if the suspect pointed that gun at officers, but he was struck by gunfire and taken to the hospital. The CHP later announced that he died.
Meanwhile, the tow truck driver involved in the initial assault was also taken to the hospital in critical condition.
The driver works for Jan's Towing. In a social media post, the company said, in part:
"Right now, our hearts are with our employee, their family, our team and everyone affected. We ask that you please keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. Out of respect for the family and the ongoing law enforcement investigation, we will not be commenting further or sharing additional details at this time."
No officers were hurt in either incident.
Over on the 210 Freeway, all eastbound lanes were shut down due to the police activity, snarling traffic in the area for hours. All lanes reopened around noon.
