SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- A Simi Valley motorcycle officer was hospitalized after being hit by a truck at an intersection Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities said around 4:50 p.m., Officer Tom Carney was traveling southbound on Tapo Canyon Road near Los Angeles Avenue. As Carney crossed the intersection, a small pickup truck heading northbound made a left or U-turn right into the path of the motorcycle.

Carney crashed into the truck and was thrown from his bike. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital. Authorities said Carney underwent several hours of surgery and remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

The department added that the 14-year veteran may require additional surgeries over the next few days and weeks. He sustained serious head injuries, multiple fractures and internal injuries, but the department said it will not release specific information on his injuries.

The driver of the truck, identified as Traci Hobbs, 43, of Simi Valley, was not hurt during the crash and no arrest was made. Authorities said alcohol nor drugs played a factor in the crash.

The police department along with the California Highway Patrol are investigating the incident.

Anyone with more information was asked to call the Moorpark California Highway Patrol Office at (805) 553-0800.

A blood drive has also been set up to support Carney. It will be held on Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Simi Valley High School, 5400 Cochran St., in the multi-purpose room.
