POMONA, Calif. (KABC) -- The Los Angeles County Fair opened Friday, and this year, the end-of-summer celebration is expected to put a twist on tradition.

In addition to the rides, food and farm animals, the fair is adding a nightclub, fire dancing and a large Chinese lantern display called "Luminasia."

"Lumina is a spectacular evening event made up of giant handmade, custom-built, larger-than-life, lit-up lanterns," said Michael Chee, director of marketing at Fairplex.

The Grinding Gears nightclub opens at 6 p.m. and will feature a live band, DJ and aerial artists.

There will also be a "Hall of Heroes" that celebrates the science behind your favorite comic book characters.

Four acres devoted to growing a range of California crops have been added to The Farm at the Fairplex, which also includes the Big Red Barn.

The fair's End of Summer Concert Series kicks off Friday with Zendaya. Other artists scheduled to perform over the next few weeks include Boyz II Men, Heart, LL Cool J, and Earth, Wind & Fire.

The fair runs through Sept. 28 at the Fairplex in Pomona.
