Police seeking suspects who stole cash registers from Subway shops

TORRANCE, Calif. (KABC) -- Torrance police are looking for two men who ripped cash registers out of two Subway shops in Torrance and possibly were looking to hit another before they narrowly escaped.

The two hit a shop on Crenshaw Boulevard around 9:30 p.m. Sunday and then another a short time later on Pacific Coast Highway just a few miles away.

"One of the individuals ordered a sandwich and while the worker was making the sandwich, one of the other individuals proceeded to rip the cash register from the counter and they fled the store with that cash register," said Sgt. Paul Kranke with the Torrance Police Department.

Torrance police began checking other Subway restaurants in the area and notified neighboring police agencies.

Redondo Beach officers apparently came across the same two suspects at another Subway later that night. The two men fled on foot, leaving their car behind. Officers couldn't track them down, but they found the two cash registers from the earlier robberies inside the vehicle.

Because the suspects didn't confront the store employees and demand money, the crimes are considered grand theft and not robberies, which would mean a relatively lighter sentence if caught. Still police are looking for the public's help identifying the suspects.
