Man gets 42 years to life for 2013 Venice hit-and-run

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The man convicted of second-degree murder after plowing his vehicle through a crowd on the Venice Beach boardwalk has been sentenced to a total of 42 years to life behind bars.

Alice Gruppioni, 32, who had been married for just two weeks, was among throngs of people on the Venice Beach boardwalk on Aug. 3, 2013, when Nathan Campbell plowed through in a Dodge Avenger, injuring several people and killing Gruppioni.

Home video of Gruppioni celebrating her aunt's birthday party was part of a video statement played in court as Campbell was sentenced for her murder.

"I think of it as the real last day of innocent happiness as the Gruppioni girls," said Katia Gruppioni, the victim's aunt.

The 40-year-old was sentenced to prison for killing Gruppioni, who was on her honeymoon, and injuring 17 others in the crash on the crowded Venice boardwalk.

Campbell received 15 years to life plus one year for his second-degree murder conviction. He received 26 years for several counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

No cameras were allowed in court for the sentencing, but in a letter Campbell read to the judge he said no words would ever express his sorrow, but stopped short of accepting full responsibility for that deadly day.

"The sense of remorse he expressed was diluted by the lack of responsibility," said prosecutor Victor Avila. "To this day he claims it's an accident. The jury found this was not an accident; this was an intentional act that he acted with a conscious disregard for human life."

Prosecutors said Campbell was gunning for a drug dealer who had ripped him off, when he steered his car around the poles and onto the boardwalk, accelerating through the crowd.

In her emotional video, Gruppioni's aunt said the family has received a life sentence in pain and grief, and said Gruppioni's father has only wanted one thing.

"He is just waiting for justice. He just asked me to do my best to ensure that justice will be made," said Katia Gruppioni.

Campbell's attorney said he plans to appeal the sentence and conviction.
