Oldest auction house in California preserves public auction tradition
Abell Auction Company, the oldest auction house in California, keeps the tradition of public auctions alive with sales of rare items from exclusive estates.

COMMERCE, Calif. -- Established in 1916, Abell Auction Company is the oldest auction house in California. It remains family-owned and operated by a fourth generation of Abell family members.

"You're dealing with the same family. I think that there's a lot of comfort in that," said Patrick Abell, Vice President of Abell Auction Company. "We're going in estates and it could be an ex-president, a judge, or a celebrity. You can find a thousand-year-old antiquity. Or you can find contemporary art from Warhol, Keith Haring, or an original Mickey Mouse doll signed by Walt Disney."

"At the auction houses, it's like a free museum out in the world," said Hollywood historian Marc Wanamaker. "Even though I might not buy anything, just looking at all the stuff, it is an event to come to one of these places."
