City Council approves uniforms for LAUSD

LOS ANGELES The City Council unanimously approved a resolution Wednesday making uniforms mandatory at all of the district's campuses. Currently LAUSD allows each school to decide whether its students should wear uniforms.

The resolution was proposed by Councilman Jose Huizar, who served two terms as president of the LAUSD board. Huizar says schools with uniforms have had higher student achievement and make students more focused on learning.

Police officials meanwhile say the uniforms are necessary for public safety, especially in communities with gangs. They say schools like Markham Middle School in Watts have had a reduction in gang activity since uniforms became implemented.
