SANTA ANA, Calif. --
A sheriff's deputy has been charged with driving under the influence after he crashed his car into the front yard of Orange County Supervisor Bill Campbell's home in Villa Park. Mark Wayne Hewlett, 30, of Orange, was off-duty at the time. Hewlett is charged with misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood alcohol level over .08 percent, and possession of a controlled substance, Xanax, without a prescription.
The District Attorney's office says Hewlett was driving home from a friend's house about 1:45 a.m. on December 13, 2009, when he lost control of his car, drove across the front yard, and crashed into a planter of Campbell's home.
Hewlett remains on the force pending an internal investigation by the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
