Orange County sheriff deputy charged with DUI

SANTA ANA, Calif. Mark Wayne Hewlett, 30, of Orange, was off-duty at the time. Hewlett is charged with misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood alcohol level over .08 percent, and possession of a controlled substance, Xanax, without a prescription.

The District Attorney's office says Hewlett was driving home from a friend's house about 1:45 a.m. on December 13, 2009, when he lost control of his car, drove across the front yard, and crashed into a planter of Campbell's home.

Hewlett remains on the force pending an internal investigation by the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
