CHP officer dies from June 9 crash injuries

PALMS, Calif.

/*Philip Ortiz*/, a 28-year CHP veteran, had pulled over a /*Honda*/ SUV for a traffic stop on the right shoulder of the northbound /*405 Freeway*/ at around 8:30 a.m. south of National Boulevard.

According to authorities and witness accounts, Ortiz had completed the traffic stop when an Infiniti sedan slammed into him from behind.

The thrust of the crash slammed Ortiz and his motorcycle into the back of the SUV, which overturned upon impact.

Ortiz had to be extricated from the wreck, as his body was pinned between the two vehicles. Two others from the SUV and the driver of the sedan suffered minor injuries.

Witnesses say that the Infiniti was driving along the shoulder of the road to avoid heavy traffic. The driver was not arrested but may face charges once the investigation is completed.

The Infiniti is registered to a 32-year-old Los Alamitos man named Daniel Ogara, but it is not clear if he was driving the car at the time of the crash.

Ortiz, 48, is survived by his wife, parents, sister and a large extended family. His death marks the 128th CHP officer killed in the line of duty since the department's inception in 1929.
