October 9, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
The American Civil Liberties Union filed a federal motion on Friday against the Men's Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles. It wants a protective order for inmates, after reports that guards beat some of the men who reported problems.

Those problems were reported to the ACLU.

The motion filed with the court asks for a ban on retaliating against inmates for reporting problems.

A spokesman with the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department said the ACLU is exaggerating the incidents, and said the judge who oversees the jail recently toured it and found no wrongdoing.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
