On Tuesday, Frank Buckles was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. He died last month at his home in Charles Town, West Virginia at age 110.
Born in Missouri and raised in Oklahoma, Buckles lied about his age so he could serve in the war, joining the Army at age 16.
Buckles dedicated the last years of his life to advocating for the creation of a national WWI memorial on the National Mall.
Only two WWI veterans are known to survive worldwide.
