The LA's BEST After School Enrichment program teamed up with Vons to build an edible garden at Sunrise Elementary School in Boyle Heights Monday.
It includes herbs, vegetables, a greenhouse and a compost bin. The garden is being integrated into the school's curriculum.
"Helping them to make better choices to eat healthier, to understand where fruits and vegetables come from. And hopefully take this back home to their parents and develop their own gardens at home," said Edith Ballesteros, director of BEST Fit, LA's BEST.
Monday's event is part of the week's Earth Day festivities.
