The incident happened while they were trying to serve an arrest warrant on the 4000 block of F Street in San Bernardino on Tuesday.
Home video taken from a neighbor's backyard caught some of the police activity.
Authorities say the suspect, Tory Reed, barricaded himself inside an apartment. Neighbors were evacuated.
Around 6 p.m., authorities used a tank to rip out the apartment's front doors and a living room window.
Deputies tried to get him to surrender, but he charged them. That's when deputies shot Reed, who died at the scene.
It was not known if the 28-year-old had a weapon.
