LA medical marijuana shops ban: City Council wants DEA's help

LOS ANGELES

The council voted unanimously last month to ban virtually all dispensaries. In another vote on Wednesday, the council decided to ask the Los Angeles Police Department to work with DEA officials to create a strategy to enforce the ban.

The city's ban is supposed to begin Sept. 6, but advocacy groups are circulating petitions for a referendum to overturn it.

If the group gathers enough signatures, the ban will be prevented from taking effect until after voters weigh in on the issue.
