Thieves steal copper, brass from Sherman Oaks Elementary School

SHERMAN OAKS, LOS ANGELES

This theft is part of a string of others at Los Angeles schools.

For the third time this school year, copper piping used to pump water into Sherman Oaks Elementary School was stolen.

Fortunately, according to the principal, LAUSD plumbers were able to fix the problem and restore water pressure before school started Friday morning.

According to the Los Angeles School Police Department, copper-piping thefts have become a costly problem for LAUSD.

According to commodities websites, the price of copper is nearly $3.30 per pound.

Because of the thefts, school administrators have developed emergency drills on how to deal with the lack of water for drinking and bathrooms, which includes notifying parents before school starts.

Parents hope that the district can come up with a solution to prevent more thefts.
