Rock musical 'Hair' opens at the Hollywood Bowl

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The groovy 1960s rock musical "Hair" begins a three-night run at the Hollywood Bowl this weekend.

When the show opened on Broadway, it ran for 1,750 performances. Director Adam Shankman brings it to Los Angeles for three nights.

"This piece works so perfectly at the Bowl because there is no ceiling," Shankman said. "It goes out into space and orbit."

"Hair" broke ground in musical theatre when it began its Broadway run in 1968. The profanity, drugs and sexual nature caused a lot of controversy.

"It's just such a free feeling when we are in there dancing and rehearsing," said Amber Riley, best known for her role as Mercedes Jones on "Glee."

The original show also had a very famous nude scene.

"Some people will be getting naked, fully, some people will be half naked," said Jenna Ushkowitz, who played Tina Cohen-Chang on "Glee."

Sarah Hyland from "Modern Family" will not be naked at all.

"Not for me right now in my life," Hyland said.

Kristen Bell, who leads the cast as Sheila, said there's another reason for not going nude.

"It's an unfortunate decision that has nothing to do with the artistic nature of it. It has something to do with the fact that everyone has a cell phone camera," Bell said.
