REDONDO BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- An elderly man was killed and a woman was injured when they were struck by a Los Angeles Department of Transportation bus in Redondo Beach while crossing the street on Wednesday night, Redondo Beach police confirmed.

Redondo Beach police and fire responded at about 6:15 p.m. to the intersection of Catalina Avenue and Avenue I. Witnesses said the pedestrians were walking arm in arm.

Police said the pedestrians were walking northbound in the crosswalk, and the bus was going southbound on Catalina Avenue, when it turned left and struck the pair. The man was pinned under the front wheel of the truck. A tow truck was needed to lift the bus to get to his body.

The woman, who was reported to be in her 70s, was taken to a hospital and listed in serious condition.

It was unclear if the pedestrians were in the crosswalk before the bus turned or if the pedestrians walked in front of the bus.

Jackie Evans, who is studying to be an EMT, witnessed the entire incident.

"I saw somebody under the bus so I ran and crawled underneath the bus and just tried to comfort her," Evans said.

Authorities briefly shut down streets around the area and warned of traffic delays at South Catalina Avenue near Avenida Del Norte and Avenue I.

The cause of the crash was under investigation, but officials say it looked like an accident.

"We don't believe at this point that DUI is involved at all," Redondo Beach Police Sgt. Shawn Freeman said.
