Six pedestrians, five of them students, suffered minor injuries after a driver plowed into a group of people in a school parking lot in Sylmar Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

SYLMAR, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Five students and a staff member were hospitalized after a driver accidentally plowed into a group of people in a school parking lot in Sylmar Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

The collision happened outside the Sylmar Education Complex, which houses three schools, at about 2:15 p.m. in the 13300 block of Glenoaks Boulevard, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

School superintendent Adriana Abich said a parent driving a black SUV was picking up his son or daughter when he accidentally pressed the accelerator. The car then collided with another car and struck the pedestrians in the school parking lot connecting the campuses.

"His acceleration pedal got stuck and he jumped the curb and hit a few of our students. We're really, really thankful to those first responders who came out here within minutes...," Abich added.

The staff member and the students, who are sixth and seventh graders, suffered non-life threatening injuries, officials said.

The scene remained under investigation.
