ENNIS, Texas -- Skaters across America are lacing up and finding their own groove on eight wheels, just like Lunella Lafayette of 'Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.' Join host Danielle Jalade as she tours the country and meets some of the most inspiring skaters channeling their very own Moon Girl Magic!
'Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur' features Marvel's newest African American teen girl Super Hero as she combines her unmatched intelligence with impressive skating skills to protect New York City's Lower East Side from danger. Along the way, she teams up with her prehistoric sidekick, Devil Dinosaur, to give back to her community. Lunella and her family run the last roller skating in New York City.
In Ennis, Texas, 16-year-old Mikaiah Spencer is channeling her own Moon Girl Magic. She and her mother Nicole run Generations Skate, the only skating rink in their city.
"I liked roller skating and I tried, and I had my own skates but I didn't have anywhere to go," Mikaiah explains of her motivation to open Generations Skate. "I skated in front of my house, and it's country so it's not very much good concrete to do that so it was like a little square and that's it."
Mikaiah wanted to give skaters of all ages a place to come together and learn from one another, so on her 16th birthday, Generations Skate opened.
"She owns a skating rink with her family? What, girl, she sounded like me!" Mikaiah says of the parallels between her own life and Lunella's, and the important impact Moon Girl can have. "When I remember TV growing up, I didn't see a lot of African American people. So, I feel like that's good to see. It's good to see a positive character."
'Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur' is now streaming on Disney+ and new episodes debut Saturdays on Disney Channel.
Disney is the parent company of ABC Localish, Marvel, and this station.
