9-month-old shot in abdomen by father in Brooklyn; parents in custody

EAST NEW YORK -- A mother and father are facing charges after a 9-month-old girl was shot in the abdomen in Brooklyn.

The incident occurred Saturday afternoon around 4:30 on 580 Sutter Avenue in East New York.

Police say the father had an illegal Colt 45 gun in the house. The father told police he was cleaning the weapon when it accidentally discharged. The bullet struck the baby in the hip, and then came out her back.

The child, Jessica Rosales, was escorted by police to Woodhull Medical Center, and was then transferred to Bellevue. She was listed in stable condition following surgery Sunday night.

The father, 47-year old Pedro Rosales, was charged with assault, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon, and acting in a manner injurious to a child.

The mother, 24-year old Jessica Aguilar, was charged with reckless endangerment, and acting in a manner injurious to a child.

The father has a prior record for possession of a weapon, police say.
