Homeowner shoots, kills alleged intruder in Apple Valley, authorities say

APPLE VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- A homeowner shot and killed an alleged intruder early Wednesday morning at a residence in Apple Valley, authorities said.

The incident, in which a man shot another man, occurred at about 1:40 a.m. in the 16000 block of Pauhaska Road, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said.

Deputies responded to the location, along with personnel from the agency's Specialized Investigations Division, and the shooter was being questioned, the sheriff's department said. The deceased man was not immediately identified.

According to neighbors, the house is owned by a man who lives with his two children.

Josh Krites, who described himself as a longtime friend of the resident, said he believes the confrontation happened amid a home invasion.

"He's real friendly, he'll talk to anybody," Krites said of the homeowner. "He doesn't start problems, never had an issue, never heard of him having an issue with anybody. So it's kind of weird that this happened."

Neighbor Jack Fales said the shooter "did the right thing, what he did."

"You know, anybody breaks in the house -- it's not right," Fales said.

A section of Pauhaska Road was closed as detectives collected evidence at the scene.
