1,300 fired for refusing to fight

BASRA, Iraq Late last month, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki ordered security forces to confront armed groups in the southern city.

They were met though by fierce resistance from Shiite militia and the attack was quickly ground to a halt.

Also expected to lose their jobs are security forces who two weeks ago, actually handed over their weapons to insurgents in Sadr City instead of fighting.
