June 23, 2008 8:42:40 AM PDT
Falling levels of a hormone called Leptin may explain why people who lose weight often have a hard time keeping it off.A new study by researchers at Columbia University shows restoring Leptin to pre-diet levels may help weary dieters finally win the weight battle.

The hormone is a natural appetite suppressant secreted by fat cells in the body.

Experts say the discovery may one day lead to the use of leptin as a tool in weight loss maintenance.
