California gets tough on ship pollution

SAN PEDRO The California Air Resources Board approved rules requiring cargo ships, tankers and cruise ships to use cleaner burning fuel when traveling within 24 nautical miles of our coast.

They are the strictest regulations in the nation.

Similar international rules go into effect in 2015, but state leaders say they cannot wait that long to take action.

International shipping companies argue California has no jurisdiction that far from the coast.
