Gum could speed up surgery recovery

Chewing gum may be the easiest way to get your bowels back on track after colon surgery, according to a British study.The inability to go to the bathroom is a common result of the operation, but researchers found patients who chewed gum took less time to use the bathroom.

They believe chewing gum stimulates nerves in the digestive system, triggers the release of gastrointestinal hormones and increases saliva.
