Caltech calls for mental health task force

July 29, 2009 12:00:00 AM PDT
The California Institute of Technology will consider forming a mental health task force, following two on-campus suicides in recent weeks.Caltech's president made the recommendation Tuesday at a trustees meeting.

The elite Pasadena science school has only had a handful of student suicides in the past decades, but there have been two suicides in just the last two months.

Caltech senior Jackson Wang, a mechanical engineering major from Hong Kong, was found dead in his dorm room earlier this month. Three weeks prior to Wang's death, junior Brian Go, a computer science and math major from Maryland, killed himself on campus.

Both students asphyxiated after inhaling helium, but authorities say the deaths don't appear to be linked.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
