One reason for the low fares: competition.
"We are in an incredibly competitive market," Airport Director Mario Rodriguez told the Long Beach Press-Telegram newspaper. "It's a very strong aviation market. It has wonderful demand."
LAX, John Wayne in Orange County, Burbank, and Ontario are among the competing regional airports, a fact that helps reduce prices.
Rodriguez also noted that the cost of doing business in Long Beach is lower than in other parts of the state. Airlines, in turn, pass part of those savings on to consumers.
The airports in Burbank and Oakland also ranked in the top five in the survey of lowest airfares.
The Long Beach Press-Telegram contributed to this report.
