Thieves target parked cars of hikers

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. Someone is breaking into cars parked in the Angeles National Forest. In the past couple of weeks, the thieves have smashed their way into 15 cars and have gotten away with iPods, laptops and other valuables.

The L.A. County Sheriff's Department says the break-ins are a crime of opportunity, because the car's owner is far away on a hike. Authorities say the targets are leaving valuables, and the suspects are going up and down the mountain areas looking for cars and turnouts where there's an opportunity.

Deputies are stepping up their patrols of the targeted areas, but still want you to keep your valuables at home.

If you have information about the burglaries, call the L.A. County Sheriff's Department at (818) 248-3464.
