Bakersfield Amber Alert suspect killed

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. The California Highway Patrol says it was called by Fresno police around 1:45 a.m. Friday about an Amber alert suspect heading south on Highway 99. That suspect has been identified as 24-year-old Yeng Veng from Merced.

Officers tried to pull him over but he sped off. They say Veng darted across traffic, hit a guard rail and a big rig, before coming to a stop.

He was rushed to Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield where he later died. His girlfriend and children, who authorities say were in the car when Veng shot himself in the head, were found alive and well.

Officers say they also found the gun that Veng shot himself with.
