The toddler, identified as Lindsay Banquedano, was shot in the right hand and cheek, and she also has a bullet lodged in her chest cavity. The man, who is the toddler's mother's boyfriend, was hit in the foot.
Neighbor Ashlee Sneed was in the back of her apartment when she said she heard five shots.
"The way it sounded coming through our back kitchen window, it sounded like it was coming straight towards us so we all ducked," said Sneed. "I came outside and saw the little girl laying down on the floor."
The shooting is believed to be gang-related. Witnesses told authorities that a man inside a gray or brown sedan fired shots into a crowd outside the apartment building, and that the name of a Hispanic gang was shouted out as the gunshots began.
"That was a baby, she ain't lived her life. Come on now, give her a chance. She might make it, she might not make it, let's just hopes that she makes it. That was an innocent baby," said Neighbor Sheila Banks.
Detectives have no description of the suspects. Anyone with information was urged to call the L.A. County Sheriff's Compton station at (310) 605-6500.
