Indiana's Race City Rebels quickly outpaced the Derby Girls in jam after jam, giving the Rebels the lead at the half 78-16.
At halftime, fans were sympathetic to the girls. "I wish the Flint City Derby Girls were doing better. It doesn't take much for the guys to knock them off the track," said Dary Schultz, who was there with the group 611.
Still, the girls fought hard, with jammers Lexi Pro, Sally Slapher, Slim Skaty and Whiporsmackher skating furiously to score. The rest of the pack hit the Race City Rebels back as hard as they could.
"The score doesn't really indicate how well they are doing," said Lexi Pro fan Mike Vellerito. "They are having a difficult time. The girls are hitting them, but they just bounce right off."
Although they were out-muscled, the Derby Girls didn't give up, pushing for points to the end while being smacked around and occasionally flung into seating sections . "I have never been hit so hard," said blocker Lez Roll. "I was flung head over heels. I had my molecules rearranged."
The Derby Girls lost to Rebels 148-44. No Derby Girls were maimed or killed, but they all expect to nurse some bruises Monday.
"I just got my butt beat by 14 dudes. I feel great, I won't feel anything until the morning," Flint City Derby Girl founder Kymm Clark said.
Despite the loss, she still considered the bout a success. "Every seat in the house was full."
The event benefitted the Boys and Girls Club of Flint.
