A student was stabbed in the neck by another teen during a fight Thursday morning at Val Verde High School in Perris. The fight started as an argument inside a classroom during summer school and spilled out into the parking lot when the final bell rang at 11:45 a.m. Police said one of the two suspects pulled out a knife and stabbed the student in the neck.

The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery because of the severity of his injuries. He is expected to survive.

Another student, the victim's friend, was punched in the chin. A group of students gathered around, and some tried to break up the fight.

School security rushed to the scene, but the suspects had already fled. The Riverside County Sheriff's Department said detectives know the identity of the two teenage suspects, who are students at the school.

It was unclear what the argument was about that started the fight.
