The Lucas County auditor says more than 650 dog license records sold in January at the Pet Supplies Plus store on Central Avenue were lost! The Toledo Blade reports that dog owners are being asked to contact the auditor's office to verify they purchased their license. Pet Supplies Plus is offering those pet owners a $15 gift certificate.
Summer is almost over and that means back to school time for teachers and students. In just a few weeks, Toledo Public Schools will be heading back into the classroom. The transportation department is making cuts for the coming school year. Around 30 employees are facing layoffs due to eliminating bus routes district wide. Students in middle and elementary schools must live at least two miles from school to qualify for bus pickup.
A scare this morning for the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu. A powerful 7.5 earthquake generated a small tsunami wave about 9 inches high. Officials say buildings shook and power lines were brought down in the country's capital. No word on any injuries.
Plans to seal off that ruptured well in the Gulf are moving forward. BP and government leaders say the relief well could link up with the well as early as Friday. Once that happens, engineers will pour in mud and cement from the bottom. If all that works, the well that's spewed an estimated 207 million gallons of oil into Gulf will be permanently sealed.
A former British army captain braved snakes and scorpions, all to accomplish an amazing feat. Ed Stafford just finished walking the entire length of the Amazon River. He and a friend began the trip in April of 2008 on the southern coast of Peru. In three months, the friend left. Stafford says the 859-day trek proves "you can do anything" even when others say you can't.
The Butterfly House in Whitehouse has announced its theme for this year's corn maze. It's American Idol runner-up Northwest Ohio's Crystal Bowersox! The corn maze is open September 11 until October 31.
The city of Oregon is holding an open house forum for The Big Ditch improvement project. The project involves improving the roadside drainage ditch along the west side of Stadium Road from Seaman Road to Bayshore Road. The open house is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the city council chambers on Seaman Road.
The Toledo Coalition Against the Death Penalty will stand in vigil once again at the corner of Erie and Adams Streets this morning. They're protesting Roderick Davie's execution today. Davie admitted to killing two former co-workers and shooting another man at a veterinary supply warehouse near Youngstown in 1991.
The search continues this morning for an Arizona prison escapee and his accomplice. U.S. marshals are now searching the area east of Montana's Glacier National Park for John McCluskey and his suspected accomplice Casslyn Welch, who's his fiancé and also his cousin. Efforts to find the escapees were stepped up after they were linked to a double murder in New Mexico.
