Villaraigosa unveils new bicycle safety ad

LOS ANGELES Posters are going up on the city's most congested streets, reminding drivers to give bicyclists a 3-foot safety buffer.

"Cars dominate the road in the car capitol of the world, but cars and bicycles must learn to share the road safely," said Villaraigosa.

There are also plans for television commercials promoting the bike safety campaign.

Villaraigosa has become a vocal advocate for cyclists following an accident while he was riding his bike. He broke his elbow in July after a taxi cab suddenly pulled out in front of him. He also held a bike safety summit recently and is a big proponent of the city's bicycle plan, which includes building more than 1,600 miles of bikeways.
