More than 100 unlicensed contractors arrested

October 28, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
More than 100 unlicensed contractors were caught in a statewide sweep led by the Contractors State License Board.State law requires that anyone doing more than $500 worth of construction to a house be licensed by the state, which means undergoing a criminal background check.

Included in the arrests were a convicted sex offender and a convicted domestic violence felon.

"Part of the reason why they don't become licensed is because they realize they could not pass the criminal background check that is required of licensed contractors," said Rick Lopes with the Contractors State License Board. "It is something you have to think about when you are calling people out to your house."

Most of the people convicted in the sting could face misdemeanor charges.
